As we ring in the New Year, I would like to personally welcome Mitchell to our team. Mitchell has been a trusted advisor, legal counsel and all around great friend and supported since I started this journey. Because of him and his dedication, we have excelled in this fantastic adventure as a team. I am so happy to announce that Mitchell has agreed to be on our Advisory Counsel, where he will continue to serve as our chief legal counsel, fund raising advisor and sounding board.

I recall when I first introduced my Co-Founder, Mark Garver to Mitchell and we got off the Zoom Meeting and Mark called me immediately and asked, “Wow, where did you find this guy, he’s brilliant and exactly what we need”, to which I replied… homework! That was the beginning of this incredible journey, that was 2020 and we have come a long way since those early days, but we have had Mitchell helping to guide us and provide his professional advice along the way.

Julie has had an amazing career and she is currently the founder and Managing Partner of How Women Invest, an early stage venture firm focussed on high growth, tech enabled women-founded enterprises. The firm is a culmination of her lifetime of work propelling women founders to launch and find success with training, capital and networks. Julie brings her extensive experience identifying and supporting early stage entrepreneurs and twenty years as a CEO and board director. She is bringing her extensive networks, leadership and entrepreneurship experience to disruption of the venture landscape.

I am honored to join AI Safety Holdings as an advisory board member.  AISH’s mission aligns with my mission with the impact goals targeting the triple aim of outcomes, cost, and experience.

I am reminded of a friend recounting their experience of enrolling in Medicare.  A semi-retired healthcare executive with Medicare experience no less, my friend thought they knew what to do.  At the end of their circuitous experience, they had 6 logins and passwords to different sites for differing pieces of information about their coverage.  And they still did not know who was in network to set up an appointment!

Just that experience alone underlines the complexity that we have created.  I couldn’t help but wonder if each log in was for some solution considered “innovative” or at least “helpful.”

As such, AISH’s broader objective of investing in solutions that address the complex problems in healthcare addresses the unproductive practice of innovation in silos.  As a healthcare leader in the health plan space, I often encounter point solutions that may promise to “collaborate” or “coordinate,” but ultimately creates another silo that needs to be managed.  This often degrades the individual experience of healthcare (as a patient, as a provider).  Healthcare is a complex system with complex problems.  Complex solutions involve, among other things, understanding the system and working on the system in service to individuals needing healthcare and individuals trying to provide healthcare.  Complex solutions also address structures and processes that currently lead to inequitable outcomes with design centering those disproportionately impacted by discrimination.

My experience stitching together complex solutions, often integrating social, behavioral, and physical healthcare with an eye towards the triple aim and equitable outcomes aligns with AISH’s mission.  I am excited to support our efforts to end innovation silos.

I recently joined the advisory board for AI Safety Holdings, a private equity group focused on improving the healthcare system by investing in Artificial Intelligence, Healthtech and Cyber Security platforms integral to transforming the healthcare experience for patients and healthcare professionals alike. 

AI Safety and Holdings envisions advancing the following issues w/in the HC system to make significant long-term impacts:

            Simplifying Healthcare Access

            Streamlining Healthcare Staffing and Training

            Improving Healthcare Diagnostics 

            Enhancing Healthcare Anomaly Recognition

These advancements within the overall Healthcare industry immediately meshed with some of my personal healthcare industry experiences, after losing my parents recently and encountering some of these very challenges. My father was misdiagnosed with Alzheimer’s and suffered for several years before discovering he actually had Parkinson’s, very similar diagnoses however medications differ severely. Like many others, my mother experienced immense challenges from the COVID 19 pandemic and its impact on her local healthcare system; resulting in isolation from family and friends until she made the decision to enter hospice care. These personal experiences motivate me to help make a change in our Healthcare system for the better.

I am very excited to assist the AISH team in revolutionizing the global healthcare system in ways that benefit all on this planet!

I am delighted to join the advisory board as a clinical advisor to AISH. I look forward to working with the team to assure the success of AISH by contributing my clinical experience, clinical decision skills, and extensive patient care experience to the collective wisdom of AISH.

My activity in medical device, medical systems improvement, and safety-quality innovation began during my surgicaltraining at RUSH in Chicago, continued during my extensive surgical practice,and the past 5 years as CEO/CMO of SafeStart Medical, Inc. where we create transparent, patient centric surgical planning and safety software. My extensive and varied clinical experience compliments AISH’s goals to make health care delivery be widely available, efficient, affordable, safe, secure, and error free.

These healthcare delivery necessities have only been aspirations and not fully realized over the past halfcentury despite significant technological advances such as those in diagnostic imaging, information technology,information warehousing (EHRs), advances in surgery such as laparoscopic or robotic surgery, cardiac and transplant surgery, and telehealth.

Simply having more information and better medical devices without improving delivery and the quality of medical care diminishes the value of digital warehouses full of information.

Medical process improvement resists change perhaps because it requires humans to change their behavior. Many ofthe shortcomings of healthcare delivery systems addressable by AISH have their origin in deficient system design and medical care delivery processes e.g. communication and handoff errors, information silos that result in diagnostic errors, lapses in patient safety and PHI security.I feel privileged to join the advisory board of AISH as the team seeks innovative solutions to problems with healthcare delivery by invoking the novel approach of bringing companies together that excel in the use of artificial intelligence to buttress human intelligence and to compensate for human factors errors.

About Richard

Dr. Vazquez practiced general surgery for 38 years at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Emeritus 2017) in Chicago, Illinois and is a faculty member (Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery) at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University.  He attended medical school at the University of Illinois from 1965 to 1969 and completed his general surgical residency in 1974 at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois. Concurrently he attended the University of Illinois graduate school in bioengineering and physiology while he attended medical school and his residency program. He has been continuously board certified by American Board of Surgery since April 1975 and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1976.  He has served on committees of SAGES (Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) such as the Patient Safety, Quality, and Outcomes, and the Safe Cholecystectomy task force (current).

Among his professional achievements, Dr. Vazquez served as Chief Medical Officer of the Illinois State Police from 1988 to June 2002 acting as the professional medical and medical and surgical advocate for all state troopers, code personnel, and their families for all serious injuries and illnesses referred to his unit. 

Dr. Vazquez has been CEO/CMO of SafeStart Medical, Inc. since 2017. The SafeStart platform provides a simple digital framework toward zero harm and high reliability. SafeStart SAAS is designed to eliminate handoff and communication errors, to prevent harm to patients, to reduce delays, cancellations, and no shows for preoperative patients in any clinical setting.  Patients and families are actively involved in the review of their image enhanced safety record from (home when possible).
